Ayurvedic Tips for Spring

Ayurvedic Tips for Spring

As the seasons changes, our bodies require a different diet and lifestyle to stay balanced.

The heat of the sun increases in spring, kapha starts to break up and disperses throughout the body. As a result, the digestive fire becomes weak and gives rise to several kapha conditions. This is the cause for cough, cold, sinus problems and hay fever during the months of spring. A proper knowledge of diet and regimen can prevent these symptoms caused due to the natural aggravation of kapha (kapha = water + earth element in the body)

Diet

In comparison with winter, physical strength and appetite reduces during spring. Therefore, the heavy, hot diet adopted in winter should be replaced with foods more suitable for warmer weather. Lighter foods that are cool in nature are recommended. One should reduce heavy, sour, oily and sweet foods. Heavy dairy products such as cheese and yogurt should be decreased. Grains, honey and fresh mango juice are beneficial.

During spring, eat more foods with pungent, bitter, and astringent tastes and fewer with sweet, sour, and salty tastes.

Cleanse

Now is a good time to cleanse! Focus on cleaning up your diet and habits: reduce or eliminate the use of coffee, caffeine, tobacco products, alcohol, and any recreational drugs, fast foods, processed foods, meat, refined sugars, and sweets.

Eat as many simple, whole foods as possible (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds).
